Claude Mods: How to Install a Claude Code Mod

Start with the mod’s own README. Marketplace names, dependencies and supported versions differ between projects.

1. Check compatibility and source

Read the repository, recent issues and release notes. The initial listings commonly require Claude Code 2.1.287 or later, but each maintainer’s requirements are authoritative. Organization settings can restrict function hooks.

2. Add the project’s marketplace

In Claude Code, use /plugin marketplace add owner/repository with the repository specified by the maintainer. In a shell, the equivalent is claude plugin marketplace add owner/repository. A repository is not necessarily a marketplace; do not assume every mod supports this command.

3. Install the selected plugin

Use /plugin install plugin-name@marketplace-name, replacing both values with the maintainer’s exact identifiers. Restart or reload plugins as instructed by that project, then run the mod’s documented command.

Try a local checkout

For a project that supports local loading, use claude --plugin-dir ./path-to-plugin. Point at the plugin directory, which may be nested inside a larger repository. Inspect its code before loading it.

Troubleshoot a missing panel

Confirm the plugin loaded, the required version is installed and hooks are permitted by your settings. Check terminal rendering requirements and the mod’s activation command. For diagnostics, follow the project’s validation instructions and consult the official documentation.
