Claude Mods: What They Are and How They Work
A mod is a Claude Code plugin whose behavior is implemented by a JavaScript or TypeScript hooks module. It runs inside the Claude Code process and responds to session events.
What can a mod change?
Mods can respond to prompts, tool calls and session events. Interface mods can draw a panel beside the conversation or a band above the prompt through ui.render. Other mods help with context visibility, agent activity or tool-call guards. The surfaces available depend on your Claude Code version.
Mods, plugins, skills and MCP servers
Plugins are the packaging and distribution layer. A mod is a plugin using function hooks. Skills provide instructions and reusable workflows. MCP servers expose external tools and data. A project can contain several of these, but this directory focuses on mods with function-hook source.
Where do mods run?
Mods are available in the Claude Code CLI and desktop app. Individual mods can depend on terminal features, local programs or a particular operating system. Check the maintainer’s compatibility notes before installing.
How this directory selects projects
Discovery checks public GitHub plugin manifests and hook source. Those checks establish that a candidate resembles a mod; they do not establish security or compatibility. Public listings are editorially reviewed, and each page links to its original source.
